Is HumHub right for you?
HumHub is a private social network for an organization: spaces, news, discussions, events, files, a member directory and a mobile app, in one place its members log into. It is the right choice for some needs and the wrong one for others. This guide says which, and names the tool that fits better each time, so you do not spend a trial finding out.
What HumHub is good at
- One place for people who do not share an office: employees, volunteers, members, students, alumni, partners, each in the spaces they belong to, with the rest invisible to them.
- Posting, not only reading: every member can publish in their spaces, comment, react and be notified, the way they already do on consumer networks; an administrator sets who may do what.
- Structure that mirrors the organization: spaces for teams, chapters, projects or classes; groups with permissions; profile fields you define; a member directory and, with a module, a map.
- The usual tools in each space: a stream, a wiki, files, a calendar, tasks, polls, surveys, and the HumHub marketplace for what is missing.
- Owned, not rented: open source, exportable, movable between your server, CUZY and HumHub's own hosting, extensible with your own modules on Business.
When another tool fits better
| If your main need is | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A public forum anyone can read and join | Discourse | Built for long threads, trust levels and moderation at scale, with anonymous readers; HumHub is a network of members who sign in. |
| Real-time chat all day, with many integrations | Slack, Microsoft Teams or Mattermost | Channels, threads, alerts and bots posting into them. HumHub has messaging, but its center is the stream of a space, not the chat. |
| Storing and co-editing files first | Nextcloud | Files, folders, sync and office documents are its core. HumHub keeps files in spaces and integrates Nextcloud through a module when both are wanted. |
| Dues, member records with history, accounting | A membership-management system | Dues schedules, renewals and accounting belong to an association-management tool; HumHub is then the members' network beside it, with HelloAsso or eCommerce for what it sells itself. |
| Selling online courses to the public | Mighty Networks, Circle or a course platform | A storefront, a checkout and a video-course studio out of the box, priced with a commission or a tier. HumHub's LMS module teaches an organization's own members. |
| Everyone already works in Microsoft 365 all day | Viva Engage inside Teams | When every member is an employee with a Microsoft license and lives in Outlook and Teams, the intranet inside that suite costs nothing extra. |
| A broad digital-workplace suite from one enterprise vendor | eXo Platform or Workvivo | Portal, document management, recognition programs and people analytics delivered with an enterprise contract and per-user pricing. |
| A community inside an existing WordPress site | BuddyBoss | When the website, the shop and the courses are already WordPress and the community must live on the same pages. |
Several of these sit next to HumHub rather than instead of it: a club keeps its accounting tool and gives its members HumHub; a company keeps Microsoft 365 for its staff and opens HumHub to the volunteers and partners who have no license; an association keeps a Discourse forum for the public and HumHub for its members.
Signs that HumHub is the right choice
- Your people are not all employees: members, volunteers, students, alumni or partners are part of the picture, and per-user licenses would price them out.
- You want them to post, not only to receive a newsletter.
- You need groups that do not see each other: chapters, committees, classes, client portals.
- You want to own the platform: to export everything, to move it, or to add a feature nobody sells.
- Data location and a processor agreement are questions your board or your lawyer asks.
- Nobody on the team wants to run a server, and nobody wants to be locked in because of that.
How to find out in two weeks
A free trial is a real community, ready in about two minutes, every CUZY module installed, for 14 days. Create three spaces that mirror your real structure, invite ten people, post what you would really post, and watch whether they come back without being asked. The first ten steps guide says what to set up first. What you built stays when you subscribe, and nothing is lost if you stop.
Questions
Is HumHub an alternative to Slack or Microsoft Teams?
For the intranet and community part, yes: news, discussions, events, files and a directory for employees, members and volunteers who are not all on a chat tool all day. For real-time chat with hundreds of integrations, Slack, Teams or Mattermost fit better, and HumHub can sit next to them.
Is HumHub a forum?
It has discussions, but it is built as a private network of members who know each other, not as a public forum. For an open, high-traffic forum with anonymous readers, Discourse is the better tool.
Can HumHub manage membership dues?
With the eCommerce module it sells memberships, tickets and products through your own Stripe account, and the HelloAsso module syncs memberships for French associations. A full association-management system (dues schedules, accounting, member records with history) remains a separate tool; HumHub is then the members' network beside it.
How do I find out in two weeks?
Start a free trial, create three spaces that mirror your real structure, invite ten people and post what you would really post. If they come back without being asked, HumHub fits. Everything from the trial is kept when you subscribe; nothing is lost if you stop.
